Modern Albums

The Second World War put paid to any immediate plans for further albums. Production ceased and the tradition, which had lasted for nearly 40 years, came to an abrupt end.

Twenty-five years were to pass before Verkade issued their next album although this was not, from a cartophilic standpoint, the moment of rebirth. In 1965, the company produced an album entitled "Vogelzang" (Songbirds) but this did not contain collectable cards or plates. It was a fully printed book and, as such, is listed in Related Books & Album Reprints.

The actual re-emergence of Verkade Album Cards did not take place for a further 23 years when, in 1988, the company produced "Vogels in Artis" (Birds in Artis Zoo). This was followed in 1990 by "Dichter Bij de Natuur Land" (The Poetry of Nature - Land) and, 1 year later, by "Dichter Bij de Natuur Water" (The Poetry of Nature - Water). Whilst the quality of the 3 recent albums has reflected the advances in publishing over the last 50 years, the illustrations themselves have been issued in sheets containing groups of "cards". The collector then has to cut up the sheets and attach the paper "cards" to the relevant places within the albums. As a full set of sheets are issued with each album it is doubtful whether loose cards from the modern era will ever be sold individually.
