Of all the larger album plates, those from the 1936 album, "De Boerderij" (The Farm), are
probably the easiest to find in Britain. The 4 square plates depict a farmhouse during the
different seasons of the year and can usually be found for sale as a "subset" of cards.
Incidently, the standard cards from all the sets issued between 1931 - 1936 are readily
available in Britain and it is not too difficult to find most of the larger album plates.
The last two titles in the run of countryside albums have a more scenic feel to them. To enhance the artwork in these albums, Verkade decided not to issue any standard size cards with these sets but to use larger album plates throughout. Both "Waar Wij Wonen" (Where we live) issued in 1936 and "Onze Groote Riveren" (Our Great Rivers)issued in 1937 contain many really attractive plates and it is quite easy to see how they may have been snapped-up for framing.
For their 1939 and 1940 albums, Verkade re-instated the standard card size and switched themes to focus on Zoo Animals. The first of this pair of albums, "Dierenleven in Artis" (Animal-life in Artis Zoo), contains some truly magnificent artwork and proved to be incredibly popular (the company producing a total of 155,374 albums). The follow-up, "Apen en Hoefdieren in Artis" (Apes and Hoofed Animals in Artis Zoo), is an equally impressive album but, alas for purely financial reasons, it turned-out to be the last one produced by Verkade during their Golden Era.
