SIZING AND SIZE CODES:

For Cigarette & English language Trade Cards, standard Cigarette card size is assumed unless stated (i.e. the cards would fit neatly in a normal 10-pocket page). The specific codes used are in line with the abbreviations as below:-

K       =   smaller than standard

M      =   (Medium) slightly larger than standard (fit into a normal 8-pocket page)

L        =   (Large) slightly larger than Medium (fit into a normal Square-6 page)

T       =   Elongated (similar to Typhoo cards - fit into a Horizontal-6 pocket page)

EL     =   Approximately Liebig size

P        =   Postcard size

D       =   Diverse sizes (mixture of different size cards)

The greatest number of cards in the auction are of Continental origin and these normally tend to be larger than Cigarette cards. Most Ephemera items also fall into this category. We use the above EL size as a default for all such sections where the additional codes will also appear:-

S              =   Smaller than Medium cards

XL           =   Larger than EL cards (up to & slightly larger than quarter page)

XXL        =   Roughly A5 size (+/- half page)

XXXL     =   Roughly A4 size (up to a full page)

Poster Stamps, Creamer Pot Tops and Cigar Bands all have their unique basic shapes but, this aside, are normally approximately Standard Cigarette Card size or slightly smaller.

CONDITION:

The following guidelines relate to the description of items within the auction. The gradings used are based upon common practice in the UK. If you are in any doubt as to the meaning of any clause, please contact us as shown on page 3.  Every effort has been made to ensure that the description and grading of items is as accurate as possible. The descriptions and gradings are, nevertheless, based purely on our opinion of the cards and other items. Please contact us for further details if you require clarification of the condition of any item. Colour scans of additional material can be provided by email or post as long as a SAE is provided (and the number of requests is not excessive).

Important: This is an area where individual interpretations vary greatly. If you are in any doubt about the acceptability of cards in the "Better Good" or "Good" category, please ask for clarification stating the criteria you see as being the most important. Abbreviations used to help describe the condition of items are as follows (note that “o/w” stands for otherwise):-

EX

Excellent Mint or virtually mint

VG

Very Good - The cards are not quite mint and may have, what would generally be accepted as, very slight signs of wear

BG - VG

Most cards are very good although, unless otherwise stated,  the condition of others falls into the Better Good category. This grading is also used on single cards to indicate one which is not quite worthy of a VG rating.

BG (Better G)

Any faults are of a minor nature. For example, the card(s) may have slight creasing/folding, wear to edges/corners, very small nicks/tears within the border of the card, small amounts of neat writing on the face of the card, some damage to or paper/paste residue on their backs, slight marks or grubbiness etc but without distracting greatly from the image on the front of the card.

G

Good - There are significant signs of wear and/or damage to some cards e.g. badly marked/grubby, stained, scuffed, creased/folded (i.e. significantly damaging the surface of the card face), tears other than minor nicks within the border of the card etc.

F

Fair - The cards are generally in poor condition.
